A Story We Are Proud Of

The History of Our Paper Mill

01 - 09
1881 -2001

The Mill opens and operates continuously for 120 years

Built and opened in 1881 by Morrison, Bare, and Cass Paper Manufacturing, the Mill merged with West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company in 1889. The company changed its name to Westvaco Corporation in 1969, and went on to become a world leader in paper manufacturing, maintaining operations at the Tyrone Mill until 2001.

2001

The merger of Westvaco and Mead resulted in a consolidation of operations which led to the closing of the Tyrone mill in 2001. The sudden and unexpected shutdown put nearly 270 people in the small community of Tyrone, PA, out of work.

Some whose families worked at the Mill for generations

2003

A group of past mill managers, local investors, and business leaders came together with a plan to revive the mill under a new name - American Eagle Paper Mills.

The new team decided to focus on creating the best recycled printing paper in the industry

2003 – 2012

The Mill successfully retooled and sourced post-consumer waste paper to manufacture recycled rolls for commercial print production.

Sales grew and the community was hopeful for economic revitalization.

2013

A high-speed cut-size sheeter was installed, allowing the Mill to add premium recycled office paper to its product line.

This opened new markets, resulting in exponential sales growth.

2015

The line of recycled paper products was expanded with a range of vibrant colors.

From standard to custom, the launch of colored paper attracted a new market.

2016

The company strengthened its commitment to sustainability with a $10 million investment, replacing its 1957 coal-fired boiler with a highly efficient natural gas boiler.

The new energy source, combined with an upgraded power distribution system, dramatically reduced greenhouse gas emissions and lowered water intake by over 80%.

2023 – 2024

Continuing environmental improvements, American Eagle took down the 300-foot smokestack, 5-story boiler room (original energy plant), and original storage facility.

These 140-year-old structures will be replaced with new and efficient buildings and operations to enhance sustainability, grow capacity, and vertically integrate fiber prep for cost savings.

Today

Today American Eagle Paper Mills produces around 220 tons of recycled paper products daily and employs over 200 people, up over 20% from the startup in 2003.

We're proud of what our team has accomplished and excited about the future
